How Difficult it Might be to Become an STNA

STNAs, or State Tested Nursing Assistants, are a vital part of the healthcare system. They handle a lot of the hands-on daily tasks that patients need most and that can be both demanding and rewarding. If you’re considering becoming an STNA, it can help to understand what the process is and how difficult that might be for you.

You’re Going to Need Training

The biggest part of being a State Tested Nursing Assistant is passing that required test from the state. That means you’re going to need to learn a lot of information quickly. The way to do that is to find a course that has been approved by the state of Ohio and meet that school’s requirements for signing up. Usually that means being older than 16, passing a TB skin test, and paying your tuition. Some schools have additional requirements, too.

You’ll Also Need to Pass the Training Course

It’s not enough just to enroll in the course, though, you also have to pass the training course. You’re going to have classroom instruction and something called clinical training, which means you’ll spend a set number of hours working with actual patients in a healthcare setting. You’ll be graded on all of your training and you’ll need to meet your school’s requirements for passing.

Attendance Matters a Lot

Something else to remember is that your attendance at class matters more than you might think. Sure, you need to be there for the instruction, but there’s another part to consider. State minimum requirements are that you have achieved 59 hours of classroom training and 16 hours of clinical training. That’s a total of 75 hours and each one of them counts.

You’ll Need to Schedule Yourself for the Exam

After you’ve passed your training program, you need to schedule yourself for the state test. It’s a really good idea to make sure you’re as prepared as possible. Your instructors can give you tips for taking the exam, but you may want to take one or more practice exams before your test date, too. This can help you to see exactly what types of questions might be asked and what the test itself is going to feel like.

Once you’ve passed your state administered test, you’re officially an STNA. That means that you can go to work in any of the various environments that hire STNAs to work with their patients.
