What You Need in Order to Become an STNA in Ohio

Becoming an STNA in Ohio involves meeting some specific requirements, getting the education that you need, and then being able to demonstrate mastery of that education. Here are the steps you’re going to need to follow.

You Have to Meet Some Minimum Requirements

There are some basic requirements you need to meet in order to be able to enroll in an instructional program to become an STNA. You must be able to read and write English, as well as communicate in English. You also have to be 16 or older and be able to pass a background check. If you haven’t graduated from high school yet, you at least need your GED. You’ll also need your state-issued identification card and there are medical requirements, too. You need a physical and a negative TB test. You’ll also need to get some vaccinations, namely those for hepatitis B, meningitis, MMR, and varicella.

You Need to Pass an Educational Program

Once you meet the basic requirements, you can find an instructional program that you want to attend. Most of the programs offer similar training. For example, Ohio requires 75 hours of training, and at least 16 hours of those must include clinical hours. What you might look for in a training program is one that is convenient to you and that has hours for classes that work for your schedule.

You Need to Take and Pass the Certification Exam

After you complete your training, it’s going to be time to take the state certification exam. This is where you become a State Tested Nursing Assistant. The test itself is both written and includes clinical demonstrations. You’ll need to be prepared for both phases of the test. Your school may offer practice testing sessions, and that’s something you might want to participate in until you feel comfortable with the test format.

Getting Hired Is the Last Step

You’re an STNA as soon as you pass the NATCEP. The state will add you to the Nursing Registry and you’ll be able to apply to positions wherever you want as an STNA. You’ve got a lot of different options open to you as an STNA, so there is a great variety in the types of positions you might apply to. You could end up working in a small nursing home or a large, busy hospital. It’s all up to you.

Being an STNA is an incredibly rewarding career and it’s worth following these steps to explore this path. You may decide that you want to continue being an STNA for a while or that you want to work your way up in the healthcare industry and both are possible.
