What Documents You Need as a CNA Candidate

Attending a training program to become a certified nursing associate means that you’ll need to gather some documents for the program administrator. Sometimes you’ll need to do this as part of your application process, but some programs only require this documentation after you’ve been accepted to the training.

Valid Identification of Some Sort

You don’t have to have a driver’s license in order to be a certified nursing assistant, but you do need identification. Most states offer an official identification card beyond a driver’s license. This offers proof of your address and of your age, which is something you’ll need to have in order to enter a CNA program.

Your High School Diploma or GED

Certified nursing assistant programs are an educational program beyond high school. That means that you need to have graduated from high school with a diploma or passed your GED test. You’ll need documentation of one or the other in order to start your CNA training.

Health Documentation

You’ll also need to be able to prove that you’re healthy enough to be able to study to be a CNA. Most of the time this involves having a physical done by your doctor. You may also need to provide your immunization records. If any of your immunizations are out of date, you’ll need those shots before you start training. Most programs also require a TB test with a negative result.

First Aid and CPR Certification

Anybody can go through First Aid and CPR training without having to be enrolled in any sort of special training program. Some certified nursing assistant training programs offer this training in the very beginning of the program. Others require that you have both of these certifications before you start your training program. Make sure you know what your training program requires of you.

Background Check Information

Background checks are an important part of the process. Very often you’re required to obtain this check on your own for a fee. Local police departments often offer this service, so you can check with your local department to determine what the procedure is. You’ll have your fingerprints taken and entered into a database as part of the process. Once you’ve got the results, you submit them to your program administrator.

Becoming a certified nursing assistant is a huge step toward the career that you have been dreaming of for a long time. With the right paperwork, you’ll be ready to dive into your training program and start learning everything you need to know.
